Searching for a DIY party decoration that will make a big impression? Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to create a simple balloon garland without a strip that will have everyone talking at your next party!
Planning my kids’ birthday parties is one of my favorite things to do! We usually only have a party with our extended family, but I always want them to feel super special on their birthday and so I love putting together a theme with fun decorations. I started making balloon garlands when my daughter turned 2, and since then I’ve made one almost every year for both of my kids- and they love it! I love how balloon garlands make such a big impact with little expense. In this post I will tell you exactly how to make a balloon garland without a strip for your next event!
DIY: Ballon Garland Without a Strip
Maybe you don’t have time to order a kit or you just can’t find one that has the exact color balloons you are looking for. I have run into both of those problems which lead me to making a balloon garland without a strip. Now, I only make my garlands this way because it is so easy and creates a more custom look. You probably have some of these supplies at home and may need to only buy balloons!
Here is what you will need:
- Scissors
- Tape
- 3M command hook
- String or Curling Ribbon
- Balloons (I purchased these colors from Target)
Instructions:
- Blow up your balloons. You do not need helium for these balloons but I have found that a balloon pump makes life much easier! I use a hand pump which you can easily find at Target or order this one. To save even more time, this dual nozzle balloon pump is a great option. Be careful to not blow the balloons up too big in order to prevent popping and to create a more “bubbly” balloon. I recommend blowing them up to different sizes to give the garland more dimension. Tie off all of your balloons.
- Tie balloons in pairs. Next, you will take two balloons and tie them together at the neck of the balloons. This will create a pair of balloons.
- Attach balloons to ribbon or string. Take your ribbon, leaving about 12 inches on the end, and tie a knot around the neck of two attached balloons. Next, take your second pair of balloons, put it right next to the first pair at the necks. Wrap the ribbon around the neck of one balloon in the second pair. Repeat with as many balloon pairs as desired. Try to keep the ribbon pulled tight as you add the balloons so there will not be as many gaps in the garland. At the end wrap the ribbon around the last balloon pair a few times to secure the garland. Be sure to watch the video at the end of this post to see exactly how to attach the ribbon to the balloons.
- Hang it up. Next, you will attach your 3M hook to where ever you want the highest point of the garland. Take your end piece of ribbon and tie a loop or knot and hang it on the 3M hook. From here you will shape the garland how you want it by attaching it to whatever surface you are using. You can use more command strips with ribbon to give the garland your desired curved shape. If your garland isn’t too heavy you can just use tape as well. This is all very dependent on where you are hanging your balloon garland- I love seeing them on mantels, over windows and even on front doors!
- Fill in the holes. Finally, you will take any leftover balloons and fill in any gaps you see in the balloon garland. I like to blow up extra balloons so that they are small and place them in spaces that look bare. You can use glue dots or tape to attach them to other balloons.
- Enjoy! Now you have quickly and easily made a beautiful party decoration that will wow all your friends and family at your next event!
