Are you looking for a way to elevate your grocery store flowers? This step-by-step beginner’s guide will tell you exactly how to arrange flowers like a pro.
Every year when spring rolls around I am so excited to plant flowers! We have large pots by our front porch that I love to fill with colorful flowers to last throughout the spring and summer. During the winter months, I feel less inspired by the outdoor flowers, so I use this as a great excuse to bring cut flowers into our home to remind me that spring is coming again!
Having fresh flowers in your home is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to change the decor in your house frequently. I love that you can purchase beautiful flowers in the grocery store for a very low cost. While it’s convenient to pick up a pre-arranged bouquet, it is also very easy to create your own custom arrangement. Whether you are hosting a party or just want beautiful flowers to brighten your home, learning how to arrange flowers is simple and inexpensive!
Beginner’s Guide: How to Arrange Flowers
Flower arrangement tools and materials you will need:

- Tape

Picking out your flowers…
When looking for flowers at the store, I like to choose one main flower, at least one secondary flower and greenery. The main flowers will be the focal point of your flower arrangement. For my arrangement I have spray roses as the main flower. I then chose mini carnations in hot pink as my secondary flower. Finally, I then choose greenery that will coordinate well with the flowers. The only greenery my grocery store was selling at the time had very stiff stems, so the greenery is not able to drape over the vase as much as I would prefer. Even though this was not my first choice for greenery, I will still able to create a beautiful arrangement!
Step 1. Grid
Create a grid with the tape on the top of your vase. This will allow you to place the flowers in just the right place as you fill the vase.
Step 2. Greenery
Starting with the greenery, place this in the vase in various spots. I know my arrangement is going to be placed on a table against the wall when finished, so I cut the greenery to be taller in the back of my vase. If your arrangement will be on a table or somewhere it will be seen from all sides, arrange the greenery pieces around the whole arrangement evenly.
Step 3. Main Flowers
Add in your main flowers. For me, these are the spray roses. Place these in more prominent areas of your vase but with room to add your secondary flowers between. If your main flowers are larger (like sunflowers or hydrangeas) you may only need 2-3 of these in the vase.
Step 4. Secondary Flowers
Fill in with secondary flowers. I am using mini carnations in a hot pink for my secondary flowers. Fill these in between the roses and greenery to create a full arrangement. You can cut smaller stems from the main stem and place them in little areas that look sparse.
Step 5. Adjust
From here, I will take a step back and look at the overall arrangement. I don’t want all of the flowers sticking straight up, so sometimes the stems need to be cut shorter if the arrangement is looking too tall for the size vase I am using. It can take a while to create the exact arrangement I have envisioned- so don’t be afraid to take flowers out and re-place them!
Now that you know how to arrange flowers as a beginner, enjoy the process of creating a beautiful arrangement for your home!
