If you’re looking for a way to help your family financially while continuing to stay at home, I have 5 ways to make money as a stay at home mom!
Deciding to be a stay-at-home mom is a big decision for a family. You are committing to devote your time and efforts to maintaining the home and raising children, all the while likely giving up the income that you would receive if out in the work force. I believe this is one of the most worthy sacrifices we can make as moms and so rewarding in the end. But that does not mean that you need to give up all your hobbies or dreams!
So many women are creative and entrepreneurial and that can still be fostered while being at home. I started my first business in high school and continued to have different ones through college and into marriage. When kids came along it was important to my husband and me that I stay home, but I still had that entrepreneurial spirit!
All of this being said, I understand how moms can feel “stuck” and want some sort of goal or hobby that you can see tangible success in. Of course, we see success as we pour ourselves into our children and watch them become Godly children, teens and adults- but that is a process.
Maybe your family is trying to pay off debt, reach a financial goal or you just want to start a business because you have it in you! There are so many businesses women can start (and continue) from home! Today I’ll just go over 5 of them that are pretty simple and cost little to no money to begin.
5 Ways to Make Money as a Stay At Home Mom
1. Start a Blog
While starting a blog is not an instant way to make money, it’s great if you’re in it for the long haul. I’ve also found it to be a great way to keep my mind active and learning. Learning the blogging world (WordPress, keyword research, etc) is no easy task, especially when you’re trying to watch little ones. If you are looking for a creative outlet and are not in a hurry to bring money in, starting your own blog may be a great option for you! I recommend By Sophia Lee’s Perfecting Blogging course for those completely new to the blogging world. For a very reasonable price she goes very in depth on everything you need to know to start your own blog!
2. Begin an At-Home Baking Business
If you have any interest baking or learning a new skill, baking is just right for you! Having a home-based baking business is a great way to earn money from the comfort of your own home. I started my small baking business when my kids were 3 and under. I was desperate to find a hobby and creative outlet, but also wanted something that would benefit our family. Cake baking was the perfect solution- I was able to bake beautiful cakes for all of our family’s birthdays! You can find so many Youtube videos showing exactly how to decorate cakes and cookies that will have your friends anxious to place an order!
When you decide you want to begin selling your baking creations, be sure to research home-based baking laws in your state.
3. Open an Etsy Shop
Etsy is an amazing platform perfect for stay at home moms! There are so many different things you can sell on Etsy- jewelry, printables, clothing, artwork and candles are just a few of the unique things you can buy on the site geared towards handmade items. Etsy makes it so easy to list items and earn an income. It is a great platform for those not ready to build their own custom website, but want to get their feet wet in selling a product. I have personally had two separate successful Etsy shops, so I can definitely recommend this as great way for stay at home moms to make money.
4. Download the Fetch App
I discovered the Fetch App a couple of years ago and found this to be a super simple (and free!) way to make a little money. All you need to do is download the app, snap a photo of your receipt and earn points. You can redeem the points for gift cards to your favorite stores- even Amazon. You can even connect your account to your email and Amazon account to earn points on online purchases as well.
5. Cancel Subscriptions
Okay, so I realize this isn’t a way to actually earn income for your family, but it’s a great way to add more money to your budget! If you stop and consider how many subscriptions you have to various places- Amazon, Netflix, Costco, Instacart- you realize how much money is getting spent. The other great part about this option is that it adds money to your pocket for free!
Some subscriptions may be well worth it for your family but consider letting go of those that aren’t completely necessary. For instance, we recently cancelled one of our streaming movie subscriptions and have begun checking out DVD’s from the library or just purchasing the ones that we know our kids will watch a lot. Not only has this switch saved us money, but it’s greatly helped with reducing screen time. On the other hand, I’ve found that our Apple Music subscription is well worth it for the amount of music we listen to throughout the day!
Figure out what’s important to your family, but also be willing to make a sacrifice. The great thing about subscriptions is that you can always start them back again if you realize it’s something your family really relies on!
